The England star was photographed using an inhaler during the Major League Soccer Cup final in Seattle.
The 34-year-old played extra time for LA Galaxy for the second time in two weeks on Sunday and was coughing badly after the game.
"David has suffered with this since he was a young boy, but it has obviously had no effect on his performance," his agent Simon Oliveira told the Daily Mail.
"He has never sought to make it public but if it does inspire any sufferer to think they can achieve great things like many other sportsmen have done then so much the better."
More than five million people in the UK are currently receiving treatment for asthma, a condition where the airways tighten and cause difficulties in breathing, according to Asthma UK.
"Despite the fact it can be very serious for some people, if it's well managed it needn't stop you competing at the highest level as shown by David and other famous footballers like Paul Scholes and Frank Lampard, who both also suffer with the condition," the charity's lead nurse Cher Piddock told Sky News Online.

"Hopefully this news will inspire sport-loving children with asthma around the country and show that asthma doesn't have to stop you achieving your dreams."
Three-quarters of people with asthma say exercise is a trigger for the condition, Asthma UK said.
But if it is well-managed, taking part in sports activities can be beneficial because it improves lung function.
Marathon runner Paula Radcliffe, Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington and cricketer Darren Gough are among the other high-profile sports stars whose asthma has not appeared to hold them back.
Beckham's team lost the MLS final 5-4 on penalties to Real Salt Lake, although the Englishman scored his spot-kick.
But he had struggled with a cold during the build-up to the game and had pain-killing injections for a bruised right ankle before the match.
He was forced to limp through extra-time after the two sides were locked at 1-1 after 90 minutes and Galaxy had used their three substitutes.
Beckham will now turn his attention from the US to Europe when he rejoins AC Milan on loan next month.
He is hoping a run of games in Serie A will earn him a place in Fabio Capello's England squad for the World Cup in South Africa next summer.

Jessica Alba: living with Asthma, and still thriving!

Jessica Alba, one of the most beautiful and sought-after Hollywood actresses has suffered from asthma since childhood. Jessica Alba has talked openly about her difficult childhood – she suffered from asthma, obsessive-compulsive disorder and ruptured appendix). Although asthma didn’t deter her from playing sports, she got made fun of in school because her breathing machine was really loud, which she would use after an asthma attack (you can read about other notable celebrities suffering from asthma: Martin Scorsese and Lindsay Lohan).
Asthma is a common condition of the airways that causes coughing, shortness of breath, wheezing and chest tightness. There are over 140 clinical trials currently active to find new treatments for Asthma, including:
Asthma is one of the most common conditions with over 300 million people worldwide suffering from, and more than 250,000 dying from asthma every year. So if you have difficulty breathing, please do not delay your visit to the doctor! Short-term treatments for asthma include bronchodilators (inhalers) and Corticosteroids and some of the long-term control medications are long-acting bronchodilators, leukotriene inhibitors and inhaled corticosteroids.
Jessica Alba is considered a sex symbol and has constantly appeared on the “Hottest” lists of several publications such as Maxim, AskMen.com and FHM. As a kid, Jessica struggled to make friends because she moved around a lot due to her father’s job and also because she was often sick. This experience has motivated Jessica to involve herself in charity work that includes National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Habitat for Humanity, SOS Children Villages, Soles4Souls, and Step up.

you know…it’s so easy to focus on what Man CAN’T do, at times. (not that I try and let asthma hold her back…but she says all the time…”I can’t do ‘whatever’ because I won’t be able to breathe”) Now, when she says she can’t do something because she won’t be able to breathe, I can pull up this list of people who do great things even though they have asthma.
So, maybe I won’t have her try to run a marathon when it’s 100 degrees with 90% humidity…but she CAN go outside and play for a little while…even if it’s just swinging a little bit, or even looking at a book in the shade.
